Round 4, 2023

Uni vs Mets A Grade Report:

Playing mets at uni we had two debuts for A grade in Hayden Rowe and Mathew Dunn. After losing yet another toss we were sent out to field. Their openers both got off to good start and we needed a wicket to slow the run rate down. On his A grade debut Hayden Rowe stood up and took the first wicket of the match. This followed two more quick wickets. Then there was a 150 run partnership that saw two of their batters reach 100 by the end of the match. They finished on a total of 295 after there 40 overs.
We knew that for our batting innings we would need to be going a fast pace to chase down these runs. This prompted a change to the batting order to try and get us off to a fast start with Matt Johnston opening the batting. This did see off us to good start and runs were flowing but this was short lived. Mets took wickets in regular intervals. We need two of three players to post some big scores but we struggled to form any solid partnerships. A few players  getting starts but not going on with it. Aj and Noel came in and showed some clean hitting at the end but we didn’t have enough wickets in hand to get the job done. We were going at a fast enough rate but lost too many wickets. Not our week as we were bowled out for 210 in the 33 over.

3 – Andrew Johnson
2 – Ash Benham
1 – Matt Johnston

Uni Bush Chooks vs Diggers Blue One C Grade report:

Played at Uni Synthetic.

Tense finish down to the very last ball.

Losing the toss for the 4th time in a row we were sent in to bat.

Declan Else and Robert Mansfield (Bertie) set themselves in as immovable objects soaking up some of their best bowling attack and getting us off to a steady first 20 overs for the loss of just 1 wicket.  The boys went back out after the 20 over mark and stepped up the pace.  Declan was dismissed for 36 to a good ball from Samuel Monk.  Some of our other batsmen were then exposed to some of the tight bowling that Decs and Bertie had been enduring as S. Monk then notched up a hat trick against us in his last over.

Bertie then upped the scoring to the next level and we were able to plunder some juicier bowling.  Boundaries weren’t easy on the Uni synthetic field and were forced to run plenty of 2’s and 3’s.  In the end we were able to reach a not too shabby 6-180 with Bertie finishing not out with a superb knock of 90 (99).

With the ball we were then able to get A.Guse early (the comps leading run scorer), when a lovely inswinger from Dan Byrne was played onto his stumps.  Declan Else and Will Gibson then bowled a tight spell that put us ahead in the game.  Both bowlers claiming two wickets each with Decs being on a hat trick at one stage.  There was some great catches made again this week to back up this bowling.

S.Monk and D.Dann batted well for them until Chris Grundon put an end to it with a vital wicket.  We weren’t however able to finish off Diggers and they kept at us.  It came down to them needing just 13 off the last 2 overs to win with 2 wickets in hand.  Ethan Rowe then bowled an awesome penultimate over keeping them to just 3 runs and also getting a run out.  In the end they needed 5 from the last ball to win, which resulted with a legendary piece of keeping, Chris Grundon getting a stumping, his 100th dismissal with the gloves for Uni.  Go Grundo!!   Go the Bush Chooks!!   What a finish.  Victory by 4 runs.

Robert Mansfield gets the 3 points for that amazing not out knock of 90 (99).  Declan Else grabs 2 for his contribution with bat and ball 36 and 2/33 (8).  It was great to have Will Gibson back and he gets the 1 point for his 2/30 (8).

Thanks again to our fill-in players this week, namely Jason LeDilly, Wayne Muller,  and Joe Kelly who we couldn’t have won without them.  Nice catch Jason – that was a nig moment mate.  Also Steve Herden who is a legend of a bloke that offers so much to our team despite him not being seen much on the scorecard. Thanks Steve.

3 – Robert Mansfield

2 – Declan Else

1 – Will Gibson

Uni Phoenix vs Wests C Grade report:

Played at Harristown State High

Wests won the toss and bowled first.

We were sent out to bat and our opening partnership fell quickly with Dan being caught in the first ball of the second over. But now in was the danger man – Michael Sheehan. Peter and Michael combined for a partnership of 78 which put all odds in our favour. At the 17th over, Peter was bowled, and Ethan was sent it. The partnership between Michael and Ethan is what set up the game. An 102 run partnership which could only be defeated by Ethan’s bad fitness in the 33rd over. Ethan gets caught out on 46, narrowly missing his maiden fifty. Unfortunately, Little Kingy gets a golden duck the ball after, making that consecutive duck performances. That didn’t stop Michael Sheehan though, as he gets his century in the 35th over. Anthony (15) and Mitch (9*) helped Michael finish our first innings off, setting our highest total so far this season of 254.

Next was our bowling. The runs in hand did not stop Lincon from taking one of the opening batsmen’s wickets. Both him and the other opening bowler, Mitch, alongside some tight fielding kept Wests to 27 in their first 10 overs. Dan picked up a wicket right before drinks break, making it 2/52 after 20 overs. In the second half of their innings, our fielding stayed tight, with Ben, Anthony and Mitch picking up key wickets, and Dan and Lincon picking up their second. Wests finished the 40 overs at 7/138, a third win for a season, and another convincing one.

As you would expect, Michael takes the three points with his 126*(122) with 19 boundaries, Ethan gets two points for his 46(56), and Lincon takes the one point with his tight opening bowling, getting two wickets in the process.

3 – Michael Sheehan

2 – Ethan Payne

1 – Lincon Paroz
